The Marine Technology Society is a strong supporter of MATE, the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center. The MATE Center also works with local and national high school educators to bring the exciting world of marine science and technology into their classrooms.

MATE Summer Institutes

The MATE Center hosts annual faculty development summer institutes for high school, community college, university, and informal educators from across the country. The goal of these institutes is to provide educators with the curriculum resource materials, background information, and hands-on experiences that they need to incorporate marine science and technology topics and projects into their classrooms. In addition, MATE's institutes give educators the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, who share their knowledge and expertise and help to provide a real-world perspective. Drew Michel traditionally begins this week with a presentation on the history of underwater intervention from a commercial perspective.

In summer 2005, MATE will host two institutes: "Creating a GIS Field Project to Address Marine and Coastal Issues" from June 27 to July 2 and "Building Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)" from July 30 to Aug. 5. There is no fee for participating in the institutes. In addition, hotel accommodations (if you live more than 50 miles from Monterey), lunches, and some dinners will be provided by the MATE Center. Some travel stipends are also available.

The GIS Summer Institute will walk educators through each step of creating their own GIS project and exporting it to ArcReader so it can be easily shared with students. Participants will gather data from a variety of sources, including using GPS, and create a marine and coastal map that communicates a specific or variety of issues. Each participant will also create a lesson plan to use with their interactive map.

The Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Institute will provide educators with the basic skills needed to work with students to design and build an ROV to compete in MATE's national and regional ROV competitions. Participants will build a small-scale, fully functional ROV that can be replicated with students, and then use the vehicle to complete a set of pre-determined mission tasks.

For more information, click here, or contact Tami Lunsford, MATE's Faculty Development Coordinator, at tlunsford@marinetech.org, 831-646-4011. The priority screening deadline is April 11, 2005.

ROV Competitions

The MATE Center works to establish and coordinate regional competitions across the country in partnership with the MTS ROV Committee and other professional societies, industry, colleges and universities, public aquaria, and national marine sanctuaries, among others. In addition to helping students develop technical, troubleshooting, and teamwork skills, these competitions provide industry with the opportunity to heighten its visibility and play a proactive role in increasing the pool of prospective employees to meet marine workforce needs.

For more information about these ROV competitions, visit the MATE web site.
