The Offshore Technology Conference is coming up May 5th through the 8th. The 2008 theme, Waves of Change, reflects the industry’s transition as project scopes and parameters are stretched to fulfill ever-increasing demand. Changes in technology as well as changes in the workforce highlight the need to not only keep pace but to anticipate future developments. As the rate of change accelerates will our industry ride the Waves of Change?

Underwater Intervention
 The Underwater Intervention Conference is a joint effort by the Marine Technology Society's Remotely Operated Vehicle Committee and the Association of Diving Contractors. This annual meeting has multi-tract papers, workshops, tutorials and social events, and conference attendees receive a CD Rom of the proceedings.
The conference has interest for a number of diverse marine industries, including offshore oil & gas, marine construction, shipwreck exploration, ocean mining, and marine salvage. Presentation tracks include cable, remote intervention, commercial diving, and shipwreck salvage, among others. Click here to goto the Underwater Intervention 2008 website.

| Drew Michel Kicks Off MATE Student ROV Competition |

Drew Michel, Chair of the MTS ROV Committee, launched the 2006 MATE ROV competition on Friday June 23 by giving the opening address on the history of ROVs and diving. He discussed the types of underwater invention, starting with an early diving suit from 1797! He went on to talk about the use of ROVs in offshore oil exploration beginning in the 1950s and how ROV applications expanded significantly in the 90s. Drew showed many photos, including examples of different ROV types, ranging from micro class ROVs, to the popular mini class, all the way up to heavy work class. He touched on the challenges of ROV deployment, stressing safety as a top priority, and then moved on to a summary of control systems, sensors and tools. Finally, Drew showed that ROVs have uses beyond the oil industry- such as documenting marine life and collecting samples. He wrapped up his presentation with some stats about the size of ROV industry (~10,000 people are directly employed worldwide, excluding the military) and how one of the industry's greatest challenges is the need for skilled employees. Good news for the students participating in the weekend's competition!
Top-place finishers in the Explorer class were the Eastern Robotics Team from St. John's, Canada; Carl Hayden High School from Phoenix, AZ; and Clatsop Community from Astoria, OR. The winners of the Ranger class were Marine Academy of Technology & Environmental Science (MATES) from Toms River, NJ; White Rock South Surrey ROV Chix from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada; and High Technology High School from Lincroft, NJ.

The Marine Technology Society publishes a scholarly Journal, a bi-monthly newsletter, Conference Proceedings, and educational and scientific materials. All publications are offered to members at a 10% discount.

MTS Journal- This international, peer reviewed quarterly offers a selection of original contributions by professionals involved in ocean science, engineering, technology and policy. Each issue includes book reviews and commentary. To further enrich the dialogue among a wide range of readers of varying disciplines, the MTS Journal has inaugurated a new comment and reply section called Crosstalk. Readers are invited to submit a comment, question, or clarification in response to papers, reports, or commentaries printed in the Journal.
